On March 6, Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day announced that the Government of Canada is providing a payment of more than $3.5 million to the Province of Manitoba, under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA), for flooding that occurred in 2002. The heavy rains caused significant flash-flooding and $6.7 million in damage to private property and public infrastructure in southeastern Manitoba. The flooding affected hundreds of residents and resulted in several evacuations.
Minister Day also announced that the Government of Canada is providing a payment of $279,349 to Newfoundland and Labrador, under the DFAA, for flooding that occurred in 2000. The flooding caused extensive damage to private property and public infrastructure in several communities along the south coast of the province. This is the final DFAA payment for this event. Two earlier payments had been made: $600,000 in 2001 and $1,676,004 in 2005. This brings the total Government of Canada contribution to $2,555,353 for this event.
