Avian influenza detected on B.C. farm
January 26th, 2009 by Jared Serviss
On January 26, CBC News reported that 60,000 turkeys were to be culled after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of the H5 avian influenza virus in some of the birds at a commercial farm in the B.C. Fraser Valley. The CFIA has imposed quarantine to 23 farms within a three-kilometre radius of the original farm. The CFIA indicates that avian influenza viruses do not pose risks to food safety when poultry and poultry products are properly handled and cooked.
