Canada Invests $4.5 Million in Freshwater Monitoring

The Federal Minister of the Environment, Jim Prentice, announced in March, that Canada will invest $2.5 million over five years to support GEMS/Water (Global Environment Monitoring System/Water) an international water science program developed by the United Nations Environment Program. GEMS/Water, based in Burlington, ON, the site of the National Water Research Institute, provides evidence based information on the state and trends of global inland water quality required for the sustainable management of the world’s freshwater. Program activities include assessments of freshwater lakes and rivers, maintenance of a global water quality database, and management of the international network of 100 countries that participate in GEMS/Water.
