On July 29, the Toronto Star reported that the Toronto Hydro-Electric System (Toronto Hydro) announced that unauthorized third party had obtained customer information from their electronic billing system. Toronto Hydro President and Chief Executive Officer David O’Brien, indicated that approximately 179,000 customer accounts were illegally accessed and that the Toronto Police Services launched an investigation. Mr. O’Brien also indicated that the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner was also notified and was investigating the breach. Toronto Hydro indicated that it is not believed that any personal information was obtained by the unauthorized users and that all affected customers were notified.
