United States declares H1N1 flu outbreak a national emergency

On October 24, media reported that U.S. President Barack Obama signed a proclamation declaring the outbreak of the H1N1 flu to be a national emergency. The proclamation will allow medical officials to bypass certain federal requirements in order to enhance preparedness and response to an H1N1 flu outbreak. Officials described the move as similar to a declaration ahead of a hurricane making landfall.
